The Wandering of Gregory Box

On the way home from the store, he remembered that his daughter, who had left that morning to spend a year abroad studying in France, was in possession of the only key to their house.

It was not a pleasant revelation. It meant he would be locked out of his house for a year. He would have to sleep on the doorstep until she returned and could unlock the door for him. He didn't feel comfortable enough with his neighbors to ask for lodging, and he was especially non-violent and did not feel up to the task of breaking into his house to gain access, plus he had had unpleasant experiences in the past with locksmiths.

It wouldn't be so bad, he decided. The doorstep was recessed and he could use the welcome mat as a pillow.

His purchase at the grocery store was an issue of Icon magazine and some Mike and Ike candies. He decided to sparse out the Mike and Ike's to last him a year, with the magazine providing entertainment for the dull moments.

He didn't leave the doorstep for the first week. The first night he couldn't sleep, he was uncomfortable and worried about his daughter's safety. The second and third nights he was plagued by the same problems, but by the fourth night he was beginning to lose touch with reality and was settling in quite nicely. He couldn't remember the next two days very well, and the seventh he had only a hazy recollection of. But on the eighth day he was feeling more lucid and went for a walk.

He felt something very hot above him. It was the sun. He looked at his calculator-watch and read:

He had never really explored his nieghborhood. All of the houses on his block looked the same. The same basic model had been used to build them all. They were pastel colored, something between orange and pink.

He wandered far from his house. Somehow he found it impossible to find himself completely lost, despite his best attempts.

When he returned home from his walk, he noticed a slug on the driveway before him. He lay down on the sidewalk and rolled over to it on his stomach and stared ahead at slug crawling slowly towards him, just before his nose. He watched it's slowness and the mucous trail it left as it progressed.

When it got close, he scooted away from it, using the tips of his feet to dig into the ground and scrape himself backwards, as if taunting it.

He rolled over, side over side, like a child rolling down a hill, where he took a bite of grass, and, while it tasted mildly unpleasant, it was reasurring to know it wasn't entirely inedible if the need should suffice.

Being a calligrapher, he kept a variety of markers in his coat pockets. He withdrew an ornate wooden pen and began writing on the sidewalk , still lying on his tummy on the front lawn. The script he wrote in was of exquisite design. He had been having flashes of inspiration while he'd been locked outside and it was now timeto put the pen to the sidewalk, as he had no paper at hand. It was to be an epic verse.

By October, he had become comfortable with his predicament, and understood that was his own fault for only having one key to the house. His wife had the other key, but before she passed away she had insisted on being buried with her purse, its contents to be kept exactly as they were when she had died, and the key had wound up in her tomb. It didn't occur to him, anymore, the inconvenience of not being able to sleep in his bed, or to use the telephone, or to watch television, or to use the restroom.

On All Saint's Day, having exhausted his entire driveway and "share" of the sidewalk space for his epic, he had resorted to pavement that was further along, and to climbing up trees to etch it into their stock.

As Winter came, he was increasingly happy that it didn't snow in Southern California, that it remained warm all year long. Sometimes it caused him discomfort, as his skin had taken on a dark, tan color, but over time he had gotten used to it, and it no longer bothered him. What did bother him was that he hadn't been asking the question 'why?' in regard to a lot of other things. So now, he asked himself why he was writing a poem that he had to traverse the majority of the block to read. Or why he wasn't incredibly hungry or thirsty. He asked himself why he didn't care that a year of his life was to have been spent in his front year? He didn't know though. Maybe when he finished what he was writing he would understand.

As Spring approached, his Mike and Ike candies dwindled, and he slept. He slept and slept and slept and slept and didn't really ever wake up again, until the end of August.

He had fallen into a coma. Still, there was some lucidity. The scenery around him blurred and changed, like a painting being wiped with a brush. In his dreams he found himself back on his street corner, the leaves on the tree wilting from the Autumn wind. He looked towards the ground and saw what he had been writing before passing out. Now it was already completed.

He read the last part of it, curious the see how he had managed to wrap up so many loose ends. He awoke before reaching the conclusion.

He started etching in the sidewalk immediately.

He worked hard, and didn't sleep again until his daughter arrived home on September the 17th.

On that day, he finished his verse, two miles away from his home, writing the final words on a manhole cover in the middle of the street.

It began like this:

"His Weapon is a Calculator-Watch.
Many accountants & bankers
die in the war,
But the skilled calligraphers
fare well
Though they hate math,
they enjoy the way equations look..."

And it ends:

"And now it brings me here,

So everything depends on this,

But she will be quiet,

And have to read all of it to understand,

I'm bleeding vehemently."

The car hit him a moment later, smiling.

Dead C Documentary (Rubber Gloves): Will Kapinos' final project at UNT's film school deals with legendary New Zealand band the Dead C, and here is a little description of the film. Should be very good:

The Dead C. made a rare U.S. appearance at the Sonic Youth-curated All Tomorrows Parties festival in Los Angeles, CA on 17 March 2002. The festival was the first show of a three-day mini-tour through LA and San Francisco to promote their album New Electric Music, the second release on their own Language Recordings imprint. This documentary features two complete performances, the first from the ATP festival and a set from the following night at The Smell, a small downtown experimental music venue. Both performances are as different from each other as the Dead C. are different from anyone else in the history of punk rock/avant-garde/free noise music. This concert film provides a rare up-close look at one of the most unique and mysterious bands to ever emerge from New Zealand.

Forerunners of post-rock and the modern-day revival of space rock, the Dead C were an improvisational, hugely prolific noise-rock trio indebted to Sonic Youth (whose Thurston Moore was an avowed fan), as well as Krautrock and psychedelia. Challenging and mostly instrumental, they were a definite anomaly on the New Zealand scene, which was still known primarily for the jangly collegiate pop of the Flying Nun label when the band first emerged in the late ‘80s.
